: Thinking about getting an Ibanez sr485. It is definatly in my price range and I like the tone range you can get out of it. Should be a big improvment over the Squire I've been playing for years. Would like to get a few opinions though. Any better basses in the $500 range?

Uncle S. the 485 is a pretty nice bass, but, for the same price or less you can get one that's a lot better, IMHO, and is still an Ibanez. Check out an Ibanez BTB405QM (Quilted Maple) The BTB is a top notch instrument. It does have a very wide neck, but, the sounds you get out of this bass will blow you away. Go to www.musiciansfriend.com and go to the 5 string section. They have 485s for $594.99, but, the Transparent Purple BTBs are going for $479.99. The black and blueberry (new color) ones are about $100.00 more. I'm not putting the 485 down, but, I've played a lot of BTBs, and they are just better all around in my book.

Good luck,
Mickster
