One important aspect of your playing that can help your bass kick out the funk (yet not enough players are much aware of it) is note lenght. I've heard lots of bass players TRYING to sound funky but not paying enough attention to their note lenghts. If you listen closely to (for example) Jaco's funkiest lines, like "C'mon, come over" and "The chicken", you'll find that 16th notes are played staccatto and dry, much like Rocco Prestia's lines with TOP. If you keep your 16th and even 8th notes a little shorter, they become more powerful, there's some space between notes that helps the groove breath, and the bass line just sounds funkier overall. Well, that's my $0.02. Hope it helped ...buena suerte and keep your bass up front in the mix,
