Just keep in mind that the origional bass did not have frets. How do you think those people learned? As far as fret lines go, I would suggest that you do get a bass with fretlines or at least markers on the side of the neck as this is a good visual aid. Sliding is definatly a part of playing fretless. Although you may not slide every note, it is what sets a frettless apart from a fretted bass. Another thing you have to consider is, how good is your ear? Do YOU think you can tell whether or not a note you are playing is "out of tune", so to speak?
