: Hi guys,

: I've decided I want to learn the bass, despite the fact that I haven't played any sort of musical instrument since the recorder at primary school... Having battled with myself for several months and decided that this is a good idea (and even if it's not, I'm going to give it a shot anyway), I'm about to go out and buy a bass... I'd be very grateful if someone here could give me a few pointers on what I should be looking for in a basic sort of bass, and how much they're going for these days (in Australian dollars if there's any Aussies here!). Any other tips, hints, whatever would be very much appreciated!

Alison,
Congratulations on your decision to learn bass! :-)

I'm not sure what's available in Australia, but I'd imagine you'd want to spend at *least* $200-300 (Aus) to get a fairly decent starter bass. Here in the USA, we have an online music wholesaler called MusicYo (www.MusicYo.com), and they have a nice starter bass called the Kramer Focus 420S for about $100 (US). I've got one myself, and I've played it at professional gigs with no problem!

There are also complete starter packages available (at MusicYo and elsewhere) that have a bass, a small amplifier, a strap, a tuner, a cable, and picks; that might be a good option for you to get started.

Hope that helps!

-Bob
