: Hi guys,

: I've decided I want to learn the bass, despite the fact that I haven't played any sort of musical instrument since the recorder at primary school... Having battled with myself for several months and decided that this is a good idea (and even if it's not, I'm going to give it a shot anyway), I'm about to go out and buy a bass... I'd be very grateful if someone here could give me a few pointers on what I should be looking for in a basic sort of bass, and how much they're going for these days (in Australian dollars if there's any Aussies here!). Any other tips, hints, whatever would be very much appreciated!

: Thanks
: Alison

Alison,
Have you considered pawn shops? I found my ORIGINAL Ampeg clear body hanging on the wall of a pawn shop next to ANOTHER clear body. With new pots and having the body polished, it was as good as new. Take someone with you that is very familiar with what to look for and you may find yourself a killer at a fraction of the new price.
