: : Hi all, I'd like to have your opinion of a Hofner 500/1 Beatle Bass...Is it a good instrument, or just over-hyped because Paul McCartney used one? I happen to think it's a beautiful instrument, but have never played one. Thanks in advance!
: The Hofner Beatle Bass is a good instrument if you want the early Beatles tone, most definitely.
: It's not limited to that, though; for example, Robbie Shakespeare, *the* pre-eminent reggae bassist, has used a Hofner for ages, and he gets along well with it.
: Being a hollowbody, though, it's a little bit fragile (at least more so than, say, a P-Bass); being a short-scale, it doesn't have the fullness of tone that a long-scale bass does.
: They tend to be a bit spendy, too; being imported adds a *lot* to the cost, and there are other basses out there that give a better value for the money.
: But I'd *definitely* give my left nut for one!
I bought a beatle bass not for the sound but because I'm a big Beatles fan. I love it. I use it about 50% of the time. It's great for classic rock but the tone is not crisp enough for most current rock. If you play a lot of 60's stuff get one!
