: hello everyone, i've been playing bass for a little over a year. I had been playing mostly with a pick until recently when i decided to play with my fingers more. The only problem is that my fingers get really sore after i play and i get blisters a lot on them. I remember reading something about lubricating ur fingers a while back in a magazine but i dont really remember too much about it. Anyways, its really bothersome (not to mention painful) and i was wondering what everyone would advise? Oh and one more thing: i was wondering what any of you all do before performing to stay relaxed because i tend to get a bit nervous. Thanks a lot!
Here's my two cents worth:
You're probably playing very hard to approximate the sound you got with a pick. This will tense up both hands. Playing softer will eliminate this.
If you try and refine your technique so your right hand fingers push DOWN on the string, instead of pulling up, you'll play with much less effort. Eventually, you might want to move to a lighter string and lower your action; that will also make playing easier.
As far as the relaxation, my method is to yawn alot - it may look strange, but it really does help you to relax before a show.
Hope you find this useful.
