: Hi all.

: I am going to build a 5-string fretless bass. I 've been playing 4-string fretted basses for more than 15 years but this is my first fretless. Many bassists (including one of the top-three in Greece!) insist that I should ask for fretlines. But I have heard people saying that when you are *really* able to play you don't use them anyway!

: Any help will be appreciated.

I would recomend not putting the lines on. The lines are placed exactly where you should place your fingers for proper intonation. On a fretted bass, you would tend to place your fingers between the frets. Maybe it would not confuse you to play your bass' differently, but it would mess me up. I bought a fretless without the lines. It was not that hard to get proficient at.
