: : : I've been looking for a new bass, and aluminum sounds really interesting to me. I once saw a guitar made entirely of aircraft aluminum. Is there such a bass in existance, and how about sound, pricing, etc. Please enlighten me.
: : If I remember correctly guitars and basses with aluminium necks were sort of popular in the 1980's. Kramer made them but I'm not sure if they still do or if they are even still in business.
: Bob, Kramer are most definitely still in business ("Skippy" Blechinger is constantly raving about his $90 Kramer Focus bass. :) ). As to whether they stil make aluminum basses, however, I'm stuck. You can find some kramer products at musicyo.com.
Kramer used to make basses with aluminium necks but they never really caught on. You can still find these beasts in the want ads and music shops - anything from $250 upwards for a private sale? A lot of shops will tell you they are becoming collectable and ask $400 upwards for a basic spec. Maybe. Great sound, great construction, no neck warps, they will outlast you! One problem, they weigh a ton and a half. I have a Kramer 450 Bass (twin humbucker) for sale in the UK and am looking for £250 - but without much interest.
There are also Travis Bean guitars (Kramer's ex partner) which are a more up-spec, American made and certainly collectable. They never quite made as a pro instrument as the aluminium expanded under stage lights.
There was also a guy called Veleno who produced about 100 all Aluminium guitars for the stars. These are now going for $1000's.
Best of luck
