When I first got my bass and amp I thought I had a killer tone... Everything sounded perfect. However, when I jumped into a band, I found myself blending right in with the drummer... that warm fat tone just didn't work... Therefore I just EQ'ed my bass (not amp, but guitar) so it was "flat"(not cut or boosted) and used my amp to do all the tone controls. This ended up making my sound a bit higher and weaker sounding on its own, but it allowed me to finally hear myself through the other guys in the band, and sound good in the mix. also, start looking up stuff on bass amp equalization.... I'm still terrible at it because I've never had any books, lessons, websites... to help me out. All I did was set everything flat and boosted and cut what I felt sounded the best (basically a lot of trial and error. I would love to learn more about bass EQ and if anyone out there is reading this then E-mail me with some sites or books that could help me more in this field... hope I helped a bit.
