: : Hi all.

: : I am going to build a 5-string fretless bass. I 've been playing 4-string fretted basses for more than 15 years but this is my first fretless. Many bassists (including one of the top-three in Greece!) insist that I should ask for fretlines. But I have heard people saying that when you are *really* able to play you don't use them anyway!

: : Any help will be appreciated.

: My first fretless was lined. It helped me learn to play, so I think it is good to start on lined fretless. After you get where you don't need them anymore it is still ok to play a lined fretless. No shame, it is not "cheating" as some people say. When I got a better fretless, it was unlined, but that was just because I found a good one for a good price. If I were you, I would get it lined.
