Hi !
It's indeed what I want, an older bass. It's what I had written ( "old").
I wouldn't think of buying a new instrument, unless I had say 30 000 for a luthier's creation.
I want an older bass.
It's just that they're cheaper in eastern europe. I know a bassist who bought a really nice bass in Poland for a ridiculous price, compared to western europe.
I might actually buy it from him, when he finds another instrument, but why not go look for myself ?
What I would need is some advice on where to go to in Prague or Budapest, or Warsaw, if anyone's got contacts with luthiers or musicians, it would be very helpful.

thanks
ben

: Hey Ben,
: May I suggest not buying a new instrument? I would find a dealer and tell him how much you want to spend and buy an older instrument. There are some great old basses priced between $4,000 and $7,000 that will increase in value providing you take care of them. A new bass will most likely lose value until many years later.

: Also, a dealer will give you no less than what you paid for it when you decide to upgrade to an even better bass because they know the bass. You can't lose.

: Another point to consider is that an older bass will continue to sound like it sounds when you buy it. A new bass is going to change over the years until it settles down and, unfortunately, they sometimes turn to the worse.

: Take someone you trust with you, like your teacher, and try out some old basses. You'll be glad you did. One student of mine recently purchased a 75+ year old Jusek for $3,000 and it sounds great.

: Don
