I have a cremona and recently upgraded to a new Englehardt M1. The M1 has much better workmanship, comparatively, but the tone of the Cremona is better--somehow boomier, warmer, more orchestral--hard to describe but larger and more like an acoustic bass ought to sound.
I noticed immediately the strings on the Cremona are softer and easier to play; they are also of a slightly larger diameter(I am not confusing this with the action; I have both basses set up similarly actionwise). I switched the strings on the two instruments and the M1 sounds a little better...
Anyone know the brand of strings on a new, stock M1? How about the Cremona? Have I run into the difference of a metal core vs. nylon core string, perhaps? I really think the M1 should sound at least as good as the Cremona--it is not quite there. fyi--I am talking about the plucked strings here, not bowed.
