HI, I am new to the upright as well and just bought a Romanian bass. Unfortunatly, I don't believe you can find a new bass that is going to be even a bad instrument for 500. My new bass was around 3000 but you should look into the plywood market. You can get into a low level plywood for around 1200-1500 that will start you off. Anything below that amount, without having someone with experience look at it, and you may be heading for trouble. Check out and his carved bass that is just under 2000. That is a great deal. Or look at or Here you can find information and basses. In your search, keep in mind that these instruments are wood and glue...wood moves with the seasons and glue is water soluable...the quality of woods and glues does matter!!

Good luck
