: I've stripped the orange coloured finish from my double bass. I'm now looking for ideas about finishes. I'd prefer not to have a high gloss finish but I'm dithering about whether it should be light or dark. At the moment I'm more inclined to a dark finish. Any ideas would be very much appreciated.
margie, i`ve just refinished my laminated bass. i decided upon a distressed/old look,so started with a base colour stain then built up the finish with various colours until i achieved the desired effect.then rubbed through the colour with fine wire wool to get a used sort of sunburst finish,if you know what i mean.the varnish i used was a full gloss, which when fully dried i again rubbed with fine wire wool and wax polish.buff to a nice sheen and voila!
not recommended method on a bass which has any sort of value, but a neat way of making your bass at least look as though it might have been made in the 19th century.............have fun.
