These guys know what they're talking about. I would just add that playing scales just may be your best friend when it comes to gaining mobility on the instrument. Don't be afraid to go back to the beginning and don't leave holes in your technique, they will find you later for sure. Also make sure to have your bass set up properly. A bass that is too hard to play can be very discouraging, and most affordable instruments don't have a good factory set up. Look for a bass with an adjustable bridge and an ebony fingerboard, as these will make a big difference in playability and tone. Most of all, work hard and have fun!
