: I am thinking of buying a newer model Kay bass. What is a good price. Is any Kay bass a good bass if its in good shape and around 1200 dollars?

"ANY" is a little dangerous .

$1200 is a great price for a Kay in solid shape, even with a "well-played" finish and chips out of the edges, a common condition. Watch for signs of repairs, especially poor ones. Listen for any buzzes that can't be accounted for and stopped, especially under the E string inside the bass- a loose bass bar is an expensive repair. All Kays have to be over 30 years old since Kay stopped manufacturing basses in the late 60's when the factory was sold to Englehardt. Email me with a serial number and I'll tell you the year of manufacture.

Good luck!
