walking lines--what approach?

a general question: when you walk lines in jazz, do you emphasize root/5/3 seven, the basic chord tones with some basic interval walk-ups? Or do you try to move more freely through the appropriate scale?

In some situations, like playing swing band stuff, it seems pretty clear that the best approach is the Walter Page/count Basie approach, where you're doing a lot of doubling of roots. In trio settings with drums and guitar, where there is only one chord instrument, I try to outline the chords really strongly, especially during solos

But my lines don't swing as well when I do that--they ted to plod. I fnd in many cases that the more free the line, even a line including "wrong notes"--the greater the sense of swing. So I move between sticking closely to the chart and just using my ear.

Any thoughts on this?
