: has anyone out there painted a bass in this way, like Bill Blacks bass. What kind of paint?, did you sand it first?
: Any input appreciated,

I painted the edges of a bass I still hae some 20 years ago - not only that but I also painted roud the f-holes and put my initials in gothic script (about 2 1/2" high ) at an angle on the top right hand corner of the front of the bass.
I followed the purfling to get the edging right and all I used was normal enamel paint without sanding the bass first, I must admit I liked it and although I don't use that bass now I would never part with it.To see what I mean about the initials look for a picture of Jack Kenelly's bass (Roy Orbison's bass player when he was on Sun records) or e-mail me your address and I'll send you a photo of my bass.
All the best ,
Andy
