: I am looking for an American Standard bass and was wondering if anyone had a lead on one. Also, what can I expect to pay for them? I am new to the upright and would also like to know where I might find a reasonably priced Kay or King. I love Roy Husky Jr's tone and that is what I am going after, if you know of any other basses that fit that tone profile PLEASE let me know. I am in Kansas City.
AmerStandard, Kays, Kings, and some Englehardts are all in that family, and you can expect to pay $1200-2000 and up depending on condition and locale. Kays come up on eBay on occasion - http://search-completed.ebay.com/search/search.dll?query=bass+kay&ebaytag1=ebayreg&ebaytag1code=0&ht=1&category0=11233&SortProperty=MetaEndSort will show a couple which were recently auctioned, one which sold at 1250 and another which didn't make reserve at $2000+, as examples.
Kays sometime pop up on the classified ads page I run as well as others, such as harmonycentral.com, talkbass.com, etc. You may want to try and stir up your own area by posting some wanted ads here and there to try and shake one loose from grandpa's attic -- some inexpensive finds can show up that way. I had a young guy over here last week whose neighbor gave him a carved German bass that needs some repairs, but it has to be worth some bucks.
Good luck in your quest!
