All good advice from Bob and Reed but if I was you I'd also check out David Gages "Buying a double bass" in Bass Player magazine (I think you can get to it on their website) but the best way is to take a luthier along.
I was lucky my first bass cost me $265 (but that was 20 years ago) and it's still fine now,my present bass cost $5500 but it is worth it !
Sometimes you come across real beauty's that look like dogs - other times you come across real dogs that look like beauty's all I can say is BE VERY CAREFUL , it's real easy to be ripped off out there !
