: I'm a long time electric bassist who recently purchased a 3/4 size student bass. It feels big to me and I haven't been playing it because of this. I've been thinking about trading it in for a 1/2 size bass, however, I've heard that the 1/2 size is inferior to a 3/4 size. The only reason I could see this is in volume, but I'll amplify anything that needs to be heard anyhow.

: Does it really make a difference?

1/2 size does have a significant lesser volume; the other factor is that 1/2 size are almost always "student models" -- not that 3/4 size aren't, but 1/2 size basses I've experienced haven't had the tone I could like. However, if you put your hands on a decent one and have a good pickup, it could be ok.

: Question 2:

: Has anyone tried those new Meisel thin basses? If so, what do you think of them?

They are ok; personally, since they are just like a 3/4 size bass except in one dimension, I don't see a whole lot of sense to them -- you may as well carry a regular 3/4 size around. I can get you a good deal on one if you're interested.
