: Thanks all, very much. Good to hear...I spoke to Bob Gollihur today as well, and he had good things to say about the current line of Englehardts, and even recommended it to me a bit more strongly than his carved basses for my purposes. It looks like he's able to give me a great deal on one himself, which I'll have delivered to me and take to my local luthier (Lisa Gaas here in L.A.) for a complete setup: fingerboard planing, new sound post, new adjustable bridge, maybe new strings, etc. I'm going to go for the S1, since it has the nicer grade of laminates and ebony fittings, which I find more appealing personally than the rosewood on the M1. I'm excited to move into this world! Thanks everybody for your advice.
Is the E-S1 the same constructions and finish as the M1 but with ebony fittings? I am thinking of getting a Engelhardt. The ES-1 is about $300. more so than the EM-1. Is it worth the extra $300... Thanks.
