My bass,perhaps like all basses, has a very pronounced ridge on the fingerboard, under the A-string, which is in evidence from close to the nut all the way to the end of the fingerboard.
Why, exactly, is this profile used? If it is in anticipation of an elevated A-string to facilitate arco differentiation between the A and E strings, why is there not a similar ridge under the D-string?
