I refinished a new engle because I just could not STAND the color.

I stained it and finished with a wiping varnish called arm-r-seal. This is a very very tough finish, very durable, and builds quickly to a hard thin coat, but it's not east to work with and like a lot of urathane varnishes is has a bluish cast to it.

I'd use a wiping poly like Bob recommends

You can get a paint striper at woodcraft stores, or on their website. Paints two prallel pinstripes
