I am renting a 3/4 Engelhardt in Houston, Texas for $61/month including tax and service package. The bass is beat-up and the action is extremely high, but the sound is good.

I think it's a good deal for the first few months, until you are sure it's something you want to continue despite hand pain, rude comments from your children, snickers from your bandmates, stares from motorists on the highway and general crap from the wife.

However, considering you can get a decent bass from Bob Gollihur for a few grand, and then turn around and recoup your money when you sell it to buy your carved top, renting is something you don't to do indefinitely.
