: I'm planning on buying an upright to use in our newly formed bluegrass band. I currently play a Martin B1, which is great for an acoustic bass guitar, but we all know nothing will sound as full, rich and mellow as a double bass. The thing is that I don't know anything about them or how to play. I checked out a 1942 Kay in Mt.View, AR on Memorial Day and it was the best sounding bass I had heard since I've started looking. My question is: Are M1 Kay basses 3/4 or 4/4 size and would it matter? I'm thinking of buy a '42 M1.
To my knowledge, Kay did not make any 4/4 basses. The 3/4 size is "the standard" size for double basses. If you can get a solid '42 for a good price, grab it.
