I talked to Larry a couple of months ago in New York and he isn't endorsing the Velvet Compas. He is still using the Weichs and said Velvet strings had sent him a set to try out and he did use them on one tour but they broke. He wasn't going to use these strings if they are going to break. He also said that he used the D and G string of the Velvets with his Weichs and liked the way they matched up. I am currently using the Compas and after five months of using the complete set I decided to mix them with E and A string Heliocore and they sound great and the balance is sweet. I have a dark bass and the E and A got muddy after a couple of months. Ben Street is using the Compas 360 (Bass Player for Kurt Rosenwinkel) and has been using them for years. Supposedly on a Mike Stern album you can hear Larry playing Ben's amazing bass with Compas I believe and his sound is amamzing. Whew.
: : : I am wondering what kind of strings Larry Grenadier is using. does anyone know?
: : I read in a Bass Player interview w. Larry he was using Spirocore Weich's.He has a bass that's nice and dark so they match up for him.He also stressed a well fitted Soundpost and general Set-up as an important link to a good sound.
: Larry is currently using (and endorsing) the Velvet Compas' strings, I believe the 360's. They give him that nice dark sound, but without the mwaaah quality of Spiros. The Velvets are more gutlike. You can really here it on the Trio Live album with Pat Metheny.
