feedback problems

i'm playing double bass in a rock setting and find i have plenty of problems
with feedback at the requisite (loud) volume. i'm using a realist pickup and a
gallien krueger mb150s combo for my '64 kay bass. before i max out the volume
on my rig, the bass feeds back on open strings and overtones. i've tried
running the amp through another cabinet for increased volume, and pointing the
cabinet away from my bass, and this seems to add some volume without extra
feedback. when the speaker points away from me though, this obviously makes
intonation and blend more of a problem.

any ideas on muffling parts of the bass, or certain electronics setups that can
reduce feedback and allow me to play at a high volume?

many thanks,
