I dunno Alec, it's kinda different from bass to bass. Gut is pretty expensive, I used to use a D and G from Golden Spiral, but for the last 5 years or so have been using Corelli 380s.
I switched to them specifically because I was looking for soemthing a little warmer in the upper register. The G string is especially fat sounding on my bass.
How long have you been playing upright? How much acoustic playing do you do (ie no amp)? Were these strings on the bass when you bought it, what other strings have you tried? What kind of ply bass? Adjustable bridge? How high/low is your action?
Have you had any soundpost adjustments? All of these factors, not just strings, are going to affect the sound you get.
