: I have a new einglehardt s1 bass and my D string broke. Can anyone suggest a good set of strings. I have only been playing for a few months and my main genre is Jazz. However, my teach is insisting that I learn arco, so I want a string that will do both fairly well.

: I think my main concern is buying a string that is forgiving to a beginner, if there is such a thing?

I'm a fan of Corelli 370 strings, which are somewhat lighter gauge than average and do pizz jazz well and are easy to bow. They're quite flexible and easy on the left hand, too. They tend to be a little bright, especially initially and have a bit more "edge" to the sound.

Pirastro Obligatos bow extremely easy as well; they are more taut that the Corellis and are sort of gut-like in their response, so if you prefer the "old school" sort of gut jazz sound, they'd be a better choice.

And of course there are others, but these are two I am currently playing.
