I just saw the Mingus Big Band last weekend in Kansas City. The bassist was playing Mingus's "lions head" bass. As far as I could see, he was using steel strings and an attached mike at the f hole. By the way this is one beautiful bass!!! The bassist (sorry I do not know his name) was using the backline equipment which consisted of a GK 800 head and a stack of Hartke cabs. I dont think that he was getting the sound he wanted through this but was professional enough to go with it and make it work. With this setup, the bass did not cut through the mix in the upper register very well. The bass sounded boomy through the front of house system though this was probably the fault of the engineer. So it goes to show that amplification of the upright is very challenging at best no matter the instrument not matter the player. Good luck to all.
