: I just started playing stand-up about a week ago. Anyone got any good advise?
I would strongly suggest to follow classical education, to learn basics, proper fingering, bowing, use eg. Simandl book. I know it's maybe boring, but a good classical foundation is TMHO a must. Also a teacher is a must : it aids you to develop discipline to prepare your next lesson; it's very simple to obtain bad habits, very difficult to get rid off them, a teacher avoids that. Maybe it's no so sad you're playing on a cheap bass : it will force you to develop the needed physical power. If you can play reasonably well on an average instrument, you will certainly do on a good instrument.
Anyway, good luck and have fun ! Also I share the same feelings as Mr Pringleman's.
