: I have this 50's Kay C-1. I got it for almost nothing. From the front it looks great. The top and sides are in great condition, but The length of the back of bass has been cracked and repaired, It looks like they used some kind of bondo/epoxy type stuff on the entier surface to conseal the cracks. From the inside it looks to be professionaly done. but the area where the soundpost is continues to crack, also the neck has been broken up from the middle to the nut but not broken at the joint or heal . I was thinking of replacing the back and neck with Engelhardt parts. Has anyone ever done this to there Kay bass? Also would it be wrong to graft the lable and stamp off the Kay to the new back??? Thanks.
The Engelhardt parts will fit your Kay, and I can get them for you at a discount if you like. I have already gotten one neck for a customer, and I know of luthiers who employ Engelhardt parts to repair Kays and other basses. However, I would not put the Kay label inside unless I put another label disclosing the bass' true nature along with it.
