: Has anyone bought one of the higher end Chinese basses?
: I have seen some of the Christopher basses and they are absolutely beautiful.
: The prices are very tempting too! I have had a good experience with my 500 dollar Cremona, its warm and twice as loud as the two Kay basses I have gone to see in the under $2000 (plywood) range. There seems to be a general mistrust since there is not a long history of these basses yet. Let us know of your experiences.

i recently bought used a ca. 1999 chen bass which came through richard moffat's shop in portland, oregon. it's all solid and beautiful and not cheap and sounds remarkably good. very clear fundamental tone and harmonics, loud, rich sound, and responds fairly well. i paid about six grand, and am very happy with the purchase. it sounds and plays better, hands down, than all the basses i played in its price range at richard's shop, hammond ashley, and the bass church (seattle). it's worth noting that it's already been played extensively for about a year and a half.

it seems the top chinese basses are competing well in the world of the carved intermediate instrument.
