: I have a big bass with a 44" string length. Anyone had any experience shortening the string length by having the nut extended down and / or moving the bridge up a bit? I would particularly like to hear some pros and cons of the the longer nut option & if the volume / sound would suffer. The bridge option would of course sacrifice some sound or tonal characteristics.
You can shorten the string length either way, but each has consequences. You're already aware that moving the bridge will affect tone/volume. If you shorten the string from the nut end, you relocate the octave - the midpoint- closer to the bridge. So your Eb neck might be come a D neck, and for sure, the shoulder will interfere with your upper register positions sooner.
My choice was to sacrifice convenience rather than tone.
