Charles Mingus didn't use any pickups for most of the time that he was recording
he was just a very powerful player and had the advantage of playing on some of
the worlds outstanding basses , he did in later years when he was suffering from
the wasting disease that was to ultimately kill him use a Polytone pickup.
Since then , however , there have been huge advances in pickup technology
and the Polytone is a very inferior pickup in my opion that I stopped using over
15 years ago !
I now use a Rich Barbera pickup which is vastly superior to anything that
was available in Mingus' day - I use this pickup on both my ply and carved basses as anyone who has asked my advice before will tell you.
For forther information on anything about Mingus , his basses or music read
"Mingus - A Critical Biography" published by Quartet books.
Hope this has been of some help.
