advice on purchasing my upright

I've played the fretless electric for about 20 years, 5 of those profesionally. Though I'v never owned one, I've played upright basses on occasion. I'd like advice on purchasing a decent sounding upright. Some criteria: I don't want ot spend a fortune, since I know that similar to the circuitous manner in which I came to find my 'sound' on an electric, it may be awhile before I really figure out what I'm looking for in an upright. I'm thinking $1500 or so. I clearly want something that will at least hold its value when I sell it for something better a year or two down the road. I'd love a very pronounced, somewhat growl-ly tone, similar to Ron Carter's on the VSOP albums. I don't have large hands so playabilbity is important.

Any help would be appreciated.
