Yeah, Scotty used guts, but he got the growly sustained tone from a very low action, something that was quite new at that time. A guy who saw him with Bill Evans says Lafaro was very quiet acoustically as a result. When you hear them on record, he's very present in the mix. A testament, pretty likely, to the recordability of the small Prescott(and Scotty's pizz technique).
BTW Dave, the Kolstein's really kickin'. Doing a lotta stuff "sans amp".
