I recently restrung my 5/8 size Mexican bass with a set of light gauge Corelli 370F strings. The top of the bass, between the f hole and the foot of the bridge (E string side)has buckled. The edges of the f hole are no longer opposite each other(on the same plane;the edge of the f hole near the brigde is 1/2 inch lower(curling in towards the bass bar. What can I do? A friend suggests replacing the bass bar. I do not wish to pay a luthier to do repairs at this point,as this bass was a bad investment, and I have spent enough already. The bass is functional, however,it stays and plays in tune, and is adequate for practice and playing with my trio(violin/acoustic guitar/DB). Can I remove the top,fix it,then re-glue in place with a reasonable hope of sucess? Also,I think I might replace the steel strings with gut-are the inexpensive Super Nil strings any good?
