Ideas for increasing low-end on a bass?

I've got a 1950's German bass, possibly Pollmann. The bass is fully carved with a beautiful book-matched well flammed back. The bass is so beautifully made, with great wood, but it doesn't have the sound!? I have experimented with different bridges, and sound post adjustments, but I can't get a decent low E out of it. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could be done to enhance the low end performance of this bass?
