: I'm looking to buy a laminated bass and was wondering how the newer Englehardts compare to the older Kay basses and how they compare overall to what's out there on the market. I'm looking a sturdy bass that can take the pounding of those "combat zone" gigs. Also, how playable are they out of the box. I can have it set-up, and probably will, but am just curious.

gary,
sorry this is a little late(don't get to check this sight as much as i'd like)but anyway, i have played bluegrass music for many years and the conditions are not always ideal, rain, cold, heat, nightime air etc.i have owned both englehart and kay both are excellent "combat zone" instruments.i have never owned either new,but a used englehart is generally cheaper than a kay.
