I donīt agree with Stefan : though the shape of the bass conserved
one element from the viola da gamba, it is really a member of the violin
family. This means that upbow or downbow donīt make such a crucial acustic
difference as for the viola da gamba. The gamba is much more sensitive
to this aspect of bowing technique.

Now the reverse is literally from the violin to the cello and bass.
I wonder if this finds applications with baroque instruments ?
