englehardts are plywood. You may want to check out Bob Gollihur's Bulgarian basses (All Hail Bob Gollihur), he's got a website. A fully carved bass that's well constructed AND cheap, well best of luck.
Strunals (and some other makers) have models that are hybrids, carved tops with laminate back and sides, as well as fully carved models. But you're still talking at least $1400 for the hybrids.
If you check the CLASSIFIEDS at this site, some guy in Queens is selling another Eastern European bass that's carved...
