: I am an upright bass player looking to buy a bass rig(cab and head). I bought an upright bass recently and I just ordered a pickup from Bob Gollihur. I am looking for something that would sound good for Rockabilly. I am only 16, so I cant afford anything too expensive. What do you suggest?
The SWR Workingman's 12 is a decent and relatively inexpensive choice, and is fairly (and appropriately) favored by many double bassists. The Eden Nemesis 2x10 also. Both have tweeters that will help articulate the slap sound.
Two good resources are: www.bgra.net/reviews/ and the Combo Shootout Bass Player Mag did: http://archive.bassplayer.com/z1999/9907/combo1.shtml
I prefer tens for double bass; I think their transient response and usually better midrange make them the best choice for projecting the sound without the low end mud that initiates feedback and hurts clarity out in the audience.
Careful of "electric sounding" electric bass amps, which seem to have a tone all their own, which overrides that wonderful acoustic sound.
