I agree with the consensus on the 3/4 bass. Save the large basses for the big city orchestra players. What you gain in size you generally don't gain in sound, at least with the basses that I've played.
I have recently begun playing a Samuel Shen carved copy of a 1690's Roggeri 3/4 bass. It is slightly larger than a standard 3/4 but plays the same. The sound is very round and is very sweet in the upper register. It is plenty loud and amplifies very well, and boy is it pretty with a beautiful handcrafted look and hand rubbed finish.
