: A conversation in the pub a few months ago has resulted in the most splendid christmas present - a 3/4 double bass!
: I'm a classically trained keyboardist who has latterly been playing much blues and a little jazz and this is a great present as I want to get into bass playing.
: The question is: what should I do now? Its in pride of place on its stand, my daughter has named it (sorry him) Bruno, its in tune and I've been having a trial go but would appreciate all and any advice from you guys out there.
: I'm assuming a 3/4 bass is perfectly adequate for a starter. Should I be planning to upgrade to a full size when and if I get more proficient?
: What about pickups/bugs - what's the advice on this?
:What to do? Play it, of course! Play it a lot! I'm always surprised at the good sounds most people can pull out of my basses on the first try. Be prepared for some discomfort while your hands and muscles adjust to the bass. Take a lesson or two (or ten..)from a double bass teacher so you don't hurt yourself and/or pick up a bunch of bad playing habits. 3/4 is pretty much the standard size these days. Have fun with it!
: I do hope you can help
: All the best
