Joe, the first thing I'd suggest to you is stay relaxed! Tension will tie your fingers up and will keep the time stiff without the forward motion you want. Second, play with a light touch because digging in may create drag and you'll lose the tempo. Third, think slow. I like to think of playing sixteenth notes with a 100 bpm click on the metronome - it makes a 400 bpm tempo for swing. Try to stay off the E string, stay in the first three positions for starters (that's half, first and second positions in Simandl) and avoid wide leaps and awkward string crossings at first. Email me if you want more specific suggestions for exercises, tunes, etc. I play with a bop-nut sax player who plays uptempo just to watch players crumble - I've got recordings of tunes in the 500 bpm range. No drummer either.
