You ain't gonna play it fast if you can't play it slow. Practice everything at slower tempos and build up speed gradually.
SR has some good advice, but I would like to add:You aren't gonna be able to play fast unless you have fast ideas. Unless you hear a line happening at that tempo, you're not gonna be able to play it at that tempo.
But the other thing is, I was talking with my teacher abaout up tempo the other day (the Obligatos definitely don't speak as quickly as the Corelli's I was using before, so I'm having to adjust my technique some) and he told me a little story.
He used to study and play with Lennie Tristano and he went in for his lesson. After the lesson they would always play a couple of tunes, and being kind of full of himself cause he had been doing a lotta gigs playing way uptempo sh*t, he set the nome at about 178 (2 & 4), not blistering, but kinda up there. Anyway Lennie, who would usually take a couple of choruses, proceeds to play about 15 or 20 choruses of just these intricate 16th note lines. After taking the head out, he stands up, closes the key lid and, shaking his finger at Joe, says "Playing fast is bullsh*t."
