Emil,
Do you mean that you've never played bass before? If thats the case I would recommend that you rent or borrow a bass and take some lessons before going bass shopping. This way you will not pay lots of money for an instrument you decide you don't like. Also you'll develope a better sense of what you want in a bass and be able to find one better suited to your needs. As for Thomas's opinion on Chinese basses, there are some very fine ones on the market today, and also, I'm sure some terrible ones. This is true for any nationality, don't let such narrowmindedness affect your decision. Find something with a sound and feel that you're happy with. As for stuff to watch for, things like cracks and bad repairs can cause problems down the road.
